What is PAVON?

PAVON is a network of centres of excellence to
strengthen Malaria Surveillance and pandemic preparedness in Africa.
- PAVON was founded on June 7, 2019 in Accra Ghana
- There were 14 countries who were foundational.
- Work closely with the NMCPs to generate data used n mitigation strategies.

VISION
Is to have Africa free of Plasmodium vivax (Pv) and Plasmodium ovale (Po).
MISSION
Is to facilitate and sustain cross talk between
African Pv scientists, NMCPs, RBM and WHO-AFRO.
Why PAVON?
PAVON seeks to bridge the knowledge gap in P. vivax and P. ovale geospatial epidemiology, asymptomatic malaria and NMCPs uptake of the available knowledge for policy decisions

Collaborative Engagement with other Institutions
PAVON received requests for collaboration with:
- Mahidol University Vivax Malaria Research group headed by Prof Jetsumon Prachumsri, is very highly
interested in Faculty and student exchange regarding P. vivax research, host genetic factors
associated with P. vivax entry to host cells and vector research
- Massachusetts Institute of Technology through Professor Andrew Lover, for graduate student
exchange and post-doc field work activity training.
This is expected to be in place within the first quarter of 2023.
Malaria Microscopy Training.
PAVON engaged interested National Malaria Programs and (NMPs) and National Health Laboratories for online and in-person practical malaria microscopy training in Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burkina Faso, South Sudan and Namibia. Botswana was the only country that had the practical hands-on training. The initial visit had such an impact that the NMP and NHL in Botswana, requested for a second training. The trainings produced WHO level 1 and Level 2 certified microscopist for the country. This feat had never been achieved previously in any training program for the country. The country has now requested for PAVON to visit their labs to ensure quality assurance with continued training in the coming year. Members with WHO Level 1 certification in microscopy and who will be interested in participating in the training program should make their interest known.
Establishment of an IRB by PAVON at Regent University
PAVON developed training materials and carried out training for interested IRB members for Regent University. The final activity for the establishment of the IRB will be from mid-January, after which the IRB will be fully functional to review research protocols. This is expected to greatly facilitate the turnaround time for the ethical approval of PAVON projects.
